Understanding the BACB® RBT® Competency Assessment Protocol
Before an applicant can register to take the Pearson VUE RBT® board examination, they must satisfy three eligibility prerequisites: complete a 40-hour training course based on the RBT Task List, pass a formal criminal background check, and successfully demonstrate clinical competency on the RBT Initial Competency Assessment under the direct observation of a qualified BACB supervisor.
The assessment evaluates whether the candidate can accurately implement behavioral protocols in real-time. The evaluating supervisor (BCBA, BCaBA, or Assistant Assessor) directly observes the candidate demonstrating measurement, preference assessments, discrete trial teaching, naturalistic teaching, chaining, differential reinforcement, and ethical conduct.
The Three Authorized Evaluation Modalities
Direct Client Observation
The supervisor observes the candidate working directly with an actual client in a clinical, home, or school setting implementing BIP protocols.
Role-Play Simulation
The supervisor or another staff member acts as the client or caregiver while the candidate demonstrates protocols (e.g. crisis holds, discontinuous timing).
Clinical Interview
The supervisor asks probing questions to verify the candidate understands the 4 functions of behavior, BACB supervision rules, and mandated reporting.
